B. Guidance about communication
Important points to note about communication
Communication quality and service areas
- Service areas and communication speed vary by device model. For more details, visit povo2.0(Japan SIM)
website. Available for use in 5G areas and 4G LTE areas.
https://povo.jp/japan-sim/service/ - Communication speed may significantly drop, or communication may be entirely unusable depending on line status and where you are using the service (povo2.0 is a best-effort mobile phone service).
Using 5G communication
- 5G-supported device models can be used in 4G LTE areas as well as in 5G areas. As 5G areas are still limited, the communication will be based mostly on 4G LTE.
- By the nature of its signals, 5G communication is less capable than 5G LTE of delivering signals to indoor environments, so even if you are in a service area, the service provided may be 4G LTE communication instead of 5G communication.
- On 5G-supported devices, the screen might show a 5G signal symbol in some areas even if 5G communication is not available for use. During calls/communication, the signal symbol may switch to “4G.”
*4G LTE areas adjacent to 5G areas, and areas with 5G signals your device does not support.
Communication speed
- povo2.0 does not have a monthly data allowance. If you do not purchase data toppings, communication speed will be limited to a maximum of 128 kbps.
- By purchasing data toppings , you can use communication without the 128 kbps cap. If you have a campaign code, etc. that you can use as a data topping, you need to enter the code at the time of subscription. You cannot enter the code after the subscription process is completed.
- For Japan SIM, you cannot purchase toppings with a longer expiration date than the number of days remaining until cancellation (counted from the day after you purchase the topping). In addition, we will cancel your contract in order after 90 days have passed since the day after the SIM becomes available for activation.
-
Data bonus
If you have a promotional code, etc. provided by one of our campaigns, etc., you can enter the code in our website to get a data bonus for the line you are subscribing to.
The amount of data earned as a data bonus, the expiry date, and other terms will vary according to the promotional code obtained. Check the terms of the relevant promotional code, etc.’s offer.
Speed limit when you use large amounts of data in a short time
- To avoid network congestion, your data speed will be limited during periods of congestion if you use large amounts of data in a short time.
*Includes usages on various toppings.
Controlling communication (communication controlling feature) to maintain and improve network quality
- To maintain and improve network quality, communication destinations and the apps you are using* will be identified.
*Messages and other details of your communication will not be viewed.
- The identification results may be used to control data speed during periods of network congestion.
Controlling communication to provide service (communication identifying feature)
- To provide data toppings and content toppings, communication destinations and the services* you are using will be identified.
*Messages and other details of your communication will not be viewed.
- The identification results will be used to provide flat rates according to the type of the toppings you purchased, to count the volume of data communication, and to control data speed.
Feature to transmit area quality information
- To improve the quality of service areas, the quality, signal status, and location (GPS information) of calls and data communication may be collected. The collected information will be used solely to improve area quality. The details of the communication itself will not be collected, and you will not be identified.
*This feature can be turned off by using a supported device.
Automatic communication and software updates
Smartphones and other communication devices may conduct automatic communication including automatic software updates (including forced updates for security improvements, etc.) without your intervention. Such automatic communication will also consume your data allowance.
Other important points to note about communication
- Connection to our networks by some mobile phones as shown below may be limited.
(1) Mobile phones that were wrongfully obtained by criminal acts such as theft and scams
(2) Mobile phones whose payment obligations (including obligations by advance payment, etc.) have not been
fulfilled.
(3) Mobile phones obtained through wrongful contracts such as by using false identification and by using
false information (about the person’s name, address, date of birth, etc.) when applying
(4) Replacement phones that were rented out when devices were broken and needed repairing and should have
been returned after the repairing
- To maintain service quality and to protect facilities, communication that has continued for a certain time (over 24 hours) may be cut off, or port control may be conducted depending on the network situation.
Supported devices and the SIM
Ownership of the SIM card and administration fees for reissuing the card
- We own the SIM card.
- On Japan SIM, changes from an eSIM to a SIM and reissuance of an eSIM are not accepted.
Supported devices
- An au device that supports Japan SIM, or a SIM-unlocked smartphone, is required.
- Devices not supporting VoLTE cannot be used.
- For some device models, use of some services/contents/phone features/downloaded apps may be limited. Please note that monthly usage charges will continue to be incurred even if services and contents are not accessible.
- For breakage and repair of the device you are using, please inquire at the store you purchased it from.
*Smartphones that do not support the communication method and frequency band au 4G LTE/au 5G provide cannot
be used. To find out which communication method and frequency band are supported by the device you wish to
use, check with the operator from which you purchased the device in advance. To find out how to set up and
operate mobile phones from other companies, you will need to confirm the details yourself or consult the
operator from which you purchased the device.
*You need to check before starting usage whether the
device
has obtained the technical conformity certification. We may reject the use of other companies’ mobile phones
that have no “technical conformity logo,” because use of such devices will be deemed a violation of the
Radio Act. Even if your device does not have a technical conformity certification, if you are using a device
in Japan that is capable of international roaming based on an international roaming agreement with an
overseas carrier, you do not need to undergo inspection when connecting to our line. For details, please see
the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications website.
- On Japan SIM, only eSIM-supported devices can be used.

Other information
Important points to note about prevention of misuse
- In principle, the number of our smartphone and mobile phone lines that customers can subscribe to under the same individual’s name will be limited to a total of five lines to prevent mass wrongful contracts under the same name (such customers may not be able to apply for new contracts, and we may later cancel their contracts. Please note that you can sign up for only one line on one povo2.0 account). However, the number of lines you can sign up for may vary in accordance with the details of your application.
- To prevent mobile phones wrongfully signed up using forged IDs, etc. from being used for crimes such as criminals disguising themselves as family members to extort money, we may present to the issuing organization the identification document information such as the driver’s license presented at the time making the application. We appreciate your kind understanding, as this is to ensure correct identification.
-
We will mutually exchange with specified telecommunications operators the subscriber information that
falls under any of the categories below. As the information will be used to screen eligibility when
signing up for a contract, applications for contracts may not be accepted in certain cases.
• Customers with payment outstanding after the contract is canceled*
• Spam senders
• Customers who rejected the request for identification as prescribed by Article 11 of the Act on Identity Confirmation, etc. Performed by Mobile Voice Communications Carriers for their Subscribers, etc. and Prevention of Wrongful Use of Mobile Voice Communications Services, and thus had their usage terminated
*For details, visit the Telecommunications Carriers Association website.
Emergency earthquake alerts
- To use this service, you need a smartphone that supports the service. Settings to receive the alerts vary by device model. Make sure to check settings to receive alerts and change the settings if necessary. Read your smartphone’s manual on how to set up the service.
- In areas close to the epicenter, the emergency earthquake alert may not issued before a strong tremor occurs.
- You may not receive emergency earthquake alerts if the device is turned off, in places signals do not reach even within service areas, and in places with poor signals.
Three things to remember to ensure smartphone information security
(1) Update the OS (basic software)
Smartphones need OS updates. Using an old OS raises the danger of being infected by viruses. If you receive
a notice on an OS update, install the new OS immediately.
(2) Check whether you have antivirus software
Some apps have been found to harbor viruses. If you are using an Android™ smartphone, use “Virus Buster™ for
au” or “Virus Block” provided by au Smart Pass Premium or au Smart Pass.
(3) Be careful where you get apps from.
Some websites that provide apps (where you get apps from) do not fully screen safety and other information
in advance. Contaminated apps are often found on such websites. When you are getting an app, be sure to use
a reliable website where the OS provider, mobile phone company, etc., are doing proper safety checks. When
installing, pay attention to the app’s features and terms of use as well.
A careless attitude can lead to a serious crime
—You may be drawn into crime before you know it—
- Who is going to use that mobile phone? Did you sign up for that mobile phone because someone asked you to, saying it would earn you good money or the like? Many cases are seen where criminals force people sign up for multiple phones and then take those phones for themselves. That mobile phone you signed up for may be used for crimes such as criminals pretending to be family members in trouble to obtain money by deception! You must never sell or transfer your mobile phone, SIM card, etc., to someone else without notifying your mobile phone carrier. [Act on Identity Confirmation, etc. Performed by Mobile Voice Communications Carriers for their Subscribers, etc. and Prevention of Wrongful Use of Mobile Voice Communications Services] If you sell (re-sell) your mobile phone as a business for a fee, you will be jailed for up to two years or receive a penalty of up to three million yen.
- Is the personal identification document your own? Is the information true? You must not present false information such as name, address, and date of birth when you sign up for a mobile phone. [Act on Identity Confirmation, etc. Performed by Mobile Voice Communications Carriers for their Subscribers, etc. and Prevention of Wrongful Use of Mobile Voice Communications Services] If you violate this law with the intent of concealing information that identifies the person, you will be charged for a penalty of up to 500,000 yen. The subscriber has the obligation to pay the usage charges and device fee for his/her mobile phone.
*The “Act on Identity Confirmation, etc. Performed by Mobile Voice Communications Carriers for their Subscribers, etc. and Prevention of Wrongful Use of Mobile Voice Communications Services” is a law to prevent wrongful use of mobile phones for crimes such as criminals pretending to be family members in trouble in order to extort money.
Eight-day cancelation (early contract cancelation system)
- The povo2.0 communication service is eligible for the eight-day cancelation period (early contract cancelation system).
- You can cancel the contract until eight days after the day you received the contract document or the service started (if you purchased a topping including a communication service, the latest day you purchased a topping), whichever is later. This right will come into effect when you execute the procedure for the eight-day cancelation.
- In this case you will not be held liable for damage or charged a contract cancelation fee or other fees. If we accepted money, etc., associated with the contract, the money will be returned. However, you will be charged usage charges for povo2.0 communication services that you received until the contract was canceled, such as calling charges incurred before the contract was canceled.
*For toppings, you will be charged the usage charges for povo2.0 communication services that you received from the day on which the topping was purchased (the day on which the topping was purchased for the first time if it is an auto-charged topping, or various call toppings) to the time the contract was canceled. Toppings will be canceled together with the early contract cancelation.
- Eight-day cancelation can be processed using povo support. Inquire through the povo website or using the designated povo2.0 app.
*Please note that au/UQ mobile shops, such as au Shop and UQ Spot, and au/UQ customer support centers, will not process the eight-day cancelation.
- If you misunderstood that the matters presented by the carrier are true and thus failed to cancel the contract before the eight days were up because the carrier had presented incorrect information on the early contract cancelation system, you may cancel the contract until eight days after the day you receive the document provided that explains that this contract can be canceled.
