(Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Ryo Hoshino; hereinafter "Ocean") will begin offering povo2.0 's Data Only eSIM for visitors to Japan, "Japan SIM," on Ocean's tax-free platform "Ocean Tax Refund" starting April 30, 2026.
To commemorate the launch, we will be running a campaign starting the same day where you can receive a promo code for "Unlimited data (24 hours)" (Note).
"Japan SIM" allows you to complete everything from applying for a data line to downloading the eSIM (embedded SIM) profile before traveling to Japan, so you can use povo2.0 communication smoothly from the moment you arrive. You can choose from a Topping of eight types of plans, including plans with a fixed data capacity and unlimited data plans, to suit your individual needs.
By partnering with a tax-free platform, visitors to Japan can not only secure a communication environment immediately upon arrival, but also access tax-free services from an early stage. Through this initiative, Ocean will create points of contact with visitors from before their arrival in Japan and before they visit our stores, in addition to the traditional tax-free support provided "at the time of arrival and after arrival," and will promote the provision of a new customer experience throughout their trip.
In Japan, a transition to a "refund system" for tax exemption is scheduled for November 2026. This will raise concerns about increased complexity in tax exemption procedures for visitors, including the need to apply for refunds via smartphone, and will also require new adjustments from retailers offering tax exemption services.
Against this backdrop, KDDI and Ocean will work together to create an environment where visitors to Japan can smoothly complete tax-free procedures under a stable communication environment while staying in Japan, by linking mobile communication services and a tax-free platform. This aims to improve convenience for visitors to Japan and create a more comfortable shopping and sightseeing experience in Japan.
Furthermore, for Ocean's member stores, offering communication benefits to visitors enhances the added value of the duty-free experience, and is expected to reduce drop-offs during the process and improve completion rates. In addition, the benefit of "free use of eSIM upon arrival in Japan by pre-registering" creates contact with visitors from the travel preparation stage, and by providing information about member stores in advance, it will also lead to increased store visits.
